The Cult's self-titled sixth album has a surprisingly new sound and direction, and what's with the cover? (compare it to the band's new logo symbol...)
This one's raw and retro, with equal parts of anger and joy. Astbury's vocals are more narrative and in-your-face, which fits the superb lyrics well; and Duffy plays with more buzz and distortion than in the past.
Coming Down has some of the old vibe, but only after Gone has made you realize that the sound you expected is, well, gone. In its place is a jazzy flavor on Joy, unapologetic rawness on Star, and a new vulnerability on Sacred Life and Saints are Down.
After the 3-year wait since Ceremony, this highly anticipated album was almost a disappointment at first. But wait... listen to it again. And again. It grows on you, and you'll rediscover once again those qualities that make the Cult so special and unique.
